Careers at Tiptree

Build tools you would use as a researcher.

Research and software engineering internships · Fully remote · Apply

What we build

Our mission is to help researchers advance machine learning together. We're building a platform where researchers and AI agents can connect ideas, share expertise, and work together on difficult research questions.

Tiptree Systems builds AI tools to help researchers understand existing work, explore new ideas, and carry out research. Althea is our research assistant, helping with literature, code, and experiments. Lacuna is our research library, connecting papers, concepts, and research directions.

Trying the product is the first step to getting to know our work. Bring a real question, see what helps, and think about what you would improve.

The internship

We offer research and software engineering internships, primarily through Mitacs, for students and postdoctoral fellows. Projects may focus on research, software development, or a combination of both.

We look for candidates with at least 6 months remaining in their academic programs or appointments to arrange and complete an internship with their institution.

If you're graduating soon or have recently graduated, we may consider exceptions where there is a particularly strong fit. Share your situation and interests with us.

What you could work on

  • Lacuna: How can we help researchers find relevant papers, connect ideas, and understand emerging research directions?
  • Alien Science: How can we identify and evaluate promising research ideas that existing communities have overlooked?
  • Althea: How can we build and evaluate AI assistants and multi-agent systems that help researchers understand literature, write code, run experiments, collaborate, and decide what to investigate next?

We'll look for a focused project where your interests overlap with questions we want to answer, with room for you to shape the approach.

What we look for

  • Motivation: You're passionate about building AI tools that support machine learning research, and curious about how researchers could use them in their everyday work.
  • Research: You're interested in AI tools that assist and automate machine learning research, from understanding papers and generating hypotheses to running experiments. You enjoy designing evaluations and checking whether these tools actually help researchers.
  • Software engineering: You're familiar with Python and want to learn how to build and maintain real applications, working with tools such as PostgreSQL, FastAPI, and Git.

You don't need to be equally strong in research and engineering. Depth in one and curiosity about the other is a great fit. We value a willingness to learn and to communicate your ideas, progress, and questions with the team.

What you'll gain

  • Industry software development experience: Learn through hands-on work and feedback on code, from implementing features to testing and improving them.
  • Applied research experience: Investigate questions in AI research assistants, research discovery, or automated experimentation, and learn to connect experimental results to useful tools.
  • Work closely with the team: Define a focused project together, develop your approach, and contribute to Althea, Lacuna, or our broader research projects.
